The Boyana Church is located on the slopes of the Vitosha Mountain, only eight kilometers from the center of Sofia.
It is part of the UNESCO heritage with its frescoes with biblical scenes and portraits of the two families of the 13th century governors and kings.
The frescoes mark the beginning of the protorenacimiento in the European painting in Europe 10 years before Giotto in Italy.
The church has three parts, the oldest of which dates back to the 10th century, the second from the 13th century and the newest from the 16th century. It is surrounded by a botanical garden made by King Ferdinand in the early 20th century.
