Embark on a journey to the ancient heart of Europe, Plovdiv, a city cradled on both banks of a river that once lent its name to the entire continent! Delve into the legends of the Thracian Orpheus, a descendant of the tribes that once roamed these lands, and discover the legacy of Philip the Great, who conquered and renamed this storied city. Wander through the echoes of the Roman era and the vibrant Bulgarian Renaissance that flourished under Ottoman reign. Ascend the hill where the old town rests, marvel at the enchanting blend of architectural styles, and lose yourself in the whimsical charm of the contemporary city.
After your exploration of Plovdiv, continue your adventure to the revered Bachkovo Monastery, the second largest in Bulgaria, nestled within the mystical Rhodope Mountains. Founded in the 11th century, this sanctuary is celebrated for its exceptional iconography, and its grand stature, steeped in rich history, makes it a beacon for visitors from near and far.
Following your visit to the monastery, savor a delightful traditional lunch at a restaurant perched at the base of a cliff, where a natural waterfall cascades nearby. The extensive menu boasts delectable dishes, while the soothing sound of the waterfall creates a refreshing ambiance, even on the warmest summer days.
As you journey back to Sofia, make a stop at the storied Asen Fortress, home to the fortified church of the Holy Virgin of Petrich. This stronghold has stood since Thracian times, later reconstructed by the Byzantines in the 9th century to safeguard the route to the Aegean Sea. It was once claimed by the Crusaders during the Fourth Crusade and remained until 1410, when it fell to the might of Ottoman forces. Named in honor of the Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Asen II, who undertook significant repairs in 1231 to fortify its defenses, the fortress bears witness to the past through an inscription etched into the rock.
