The charming 20th-century landmarks, Soviet-era appeal, and delightful local dishes offer a wonderful escape from Sofia. It is also renowned for the 10th century medieval Bulgarian fortress that stood against numerous Byzantine invasions – Krakra.
This vibrant city is home to the only museum in Europe dedicated to mining. The building of the Mining Directorate in Pernik was built in 1932.The building is distinguished by its impressive architecture and is often considered one of the most beautiful in Bulgaria. Opposite to it is located the miners’ church St. Ivan Rilski (the saint protector of the miners) and a fountain with a monument dedicated to the miners. In the immediate vicinity are situated the entrance to the first underground mine – today a mining museum, and the building of the former Mining Theater – today a historical museum.
In January, the city hosts the famous folkloric celebrations of Surva. For several days, hundreds gather to participate in this ancient Thracian tradition aimed at chasing away evil spirits. Both young and old come together to take part in the festival, proudly wearing their handmade folkloric costumes. You can reserve your spot in the celebrations now, just book a trip!
