The ancient town of Nessebar is an island in the Black Sea connected to land by a bridge which turns into a peninsula at high tide. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to the 4th millennium BC. It is one of the Hellenistic colonies on the Black Sea along with Sozopol. It is only 80 metres long and 400 metres wide and has 42 churches from Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Bulgarian times. It has an archaeology museum with numerous golden treasures and exhibits from the Thracian and Roman periods of the town and ancient walls. Its narrow cobbled streets create a cosy atmosphere with many traditional shops and restaurants.
