Sozopol is the oldest settlement on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast with an ancient history of seven millennia.
During its vast history, it was a Greek colony called Apollonia Pontica. Today, it is home to the Apollonia Summer Art Festival.
The old town is built in the traditional Bulgarian Renaissance style and overlooks the three islands near the coastal cliffs. On one of the islands, St.
John, were discovered part of the relics of St. John the Baptist.
Today they are preserved in the church of St. George, which houses a particle of the Holy Cross and the relics of St. Andrew.
Another place worth seeing is the UNESCO World Heritage site of the medieval church of the Holy Mother of God dating back to the 15th century. Visitors can stroll along the ancient fortification wall; visit the many traditional restaurants or the history museum.
