Embark on an exciting journey through time, exploring Sofia’s treasure troves of historical artifacts and archaeological wonders that illuminate Bulgaria’s vast history.
Our adventure begins at the National Archaeological Institute and Museum, founded in 1894. Situated in the medieval Boyuk Mosque, built in 1494, this museum houses a fascinating array of artifacts across two floors, curated by historical period. Unravel the secrets of ancient civilizations as your guide escorts you through the Prehistoric Hall, the Vault of Thracian Treasures, and galleries dedicated to the Classical Period and the Middle Ages.
The next leg of our exploration takes us to the Sofia History Museum, nestled within the former Central Mineral Bathhouse, constructed in 1913. This remarkable and iconic Sofia landmark offers a permanent exhibition spanning over 8,000 years. Journey through time in its eight thematic halls, discovering treasures from antiquity, the power and spirit of the past, the dynasty’s ties to Western Europe, the evolution of a Sofia street, state and municipal institutions, and the homes, clothing, and cultural vibrancy of Sofia’s citizens.
