Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, is the city with the most parks in Europe. It is also the closest capital city to a mountain in all of Europe. It is located next to three mountains and there are beautiful views of the city from any point.
Formerly called Serdika, it was part of the Roman Empire. In the outskirts there are more than 30 thermal springs with curative properties for which the first inhabitants of the region settled here eight thousand years ago.
The architecture of the city has buildings of various styles: Roman, Byzantine, Bulgarian, Ottoman, socialist, neoclassical and modern art. The oldest building is the 4th century St. George’s Rotunda, today an active Orthodox church.
The most emblematic place of the capital is the majestic Aleksander Nevsky Cathedral with its golden domes. The sculptures found in many of its streets speak of its history while adding to the artistic ambience.
