The city of the three Evmolpia hills dates back to the Thracian times when the Besi tribe populated that territory.
It is the oldest in Europe and one of the oldest in the world. After the Roman conquest it changed its name to Trimoncium and with the conquest of Philip – the father of Alexander the Great – began to be called Philipopolis. It was the Capital of European culture in 2019.
It is located in the Thracian Valley (valley of the Thracians), next to the Rhodope Mountains, the birthplace of Orphism and home of the king, father of music and mythical priest Orpheus.
The old town of Plovdiv is situated between 3 hills and the style of the buildings is of the Bulgarian Renaissance from the XVIII-XVIV centuries.
The most emblematic monument of Plovdiv is the ancient Roman theater, part of the UNESCO heritage.
